We start big: climbing wall, monkey bars, 2,100 square feet of gym, because shoulders and core hold a pencil steady.
Your kid walks out forming letters that sit on the line, spacing words a teacher can read, and finishing a page without shaking out their hand. Letter formation, line control, pencil grip, copying from the board.
What It Is
The board, not just the page
Handwriting looks like a school subject. It is not. It is posture, shoulder stability, finger strength, eye tracking, and knowing where a letter starts, all firing at the same time on a page the size of a placemat.
So when your child writes b for d, floats above the line, runs the words together, or grips the pencil like a hammer until the hand aches, more practice is usually the wrong prescription. We find the piece that is actually missing and build that, one-on-one with a licensed occupational and physical therapist, starting with a comprehensive initial evaluation.
You have been told he will grow out of it. You have been told to just keep practicing. You kept the mornings running anyway. The parents who get here fastest are the ones who stopped waiting for someone else to confirm what they already saw at the kitchen table every night.
What It Helps
Writing demands only go up. Every grade adds more of it, so a child still fighting the letters spends the year copying instead of learning, and the gap gets paid for twice. Start before the workload decides for you.
What A Session Looks Like
1
We start big: climbing wall, monkey bars, 2,100 square feet of gym, because shoulders and core hold a pencil steady.
2
Then the paper: letter formation, spacing, line control, grip, one target at a time, never all five at once.
3
You watch it live on the waiting room screen, then we debrief and hand you the piece to practice at home.
What Changes
Homework stops being a two-hour fight.
The teacher can read it without asking him.
The hand lasts to the bottom of the page.
She stops calling herself the kid with bad handwriting.
Questions, Answered
It is skill work with a therapist, built around your child rather than a curriculum a whole room moves through together. Every session is one-on-one with a licensed occupational and physical therapist, and it starts with a comprehensive initial evaluation, so we are building the part that is actually missing instead of assigning more of what already is not working.
No, and it is not a replacement for it. School services are shaped by what the district approved and shared across a caseload. What happens here is complementary, with direct collaboration with your child’s school so everyone is aiming at the same goals. Ester is also an evaluator for the NYC Board of Education’s CPSE preschool program, so she knows both sides of that conversation.
Typing helps, and it is not a substitute. Handwriting still carries tests, notes, and forms, and the skills underneath it show up everywhere else: buttons, zippers, shoe laces, cutting, holding a fork. We build the skill and keep typing as a tool rather than a rescue.
This is a plan with an endpoint, not a standing appointment. Your therapist reassesses regularly, and once your child is meeting the goals with at least 80% accuracy, discharge planning starts and you go home with a program to maintain it. You will know where you stand the whole way through.
We are an out-of-network provider, and we submit claims on your behalf when your plan has out-of-network benefits. Self-pay rates are $360 for the comprehensive initial evaluation, then $90 for 30 minutes, $135 for 45 minutes, and $180 for 60 minutes. An 8-session package is 10% off and a 12-session package is 15% off. We accept credit cards, cash, checks, FSA, and HSA. Call (516) 744-7550 and we will walk through your specific plan with you.
